ENERGY
Energy is essential for us to live our lives— without it, nearly everything would be impossible!
Unfortunately, how we make energy is often harmful to the environment.
Most of the energy we use is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). Every time you
turn on an electrical appliance, you are using electricity that has been made by burning fossil fuels.
These produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which trap the suns energy inside the earth’s
atmosphere, leading to climate change.
Climate change does not mean we will have better weather! Scientists are predicting that our weather
will become more unpredictable. We may see hotter summers with less rain, fewer very cold winters,
and more winter storms with more rain. This is likely to result in more frequent flash floods and greater
pressure on water resources. It may also have effects on farming and wildlife.
Climate change over the next 30—40 years will be a result of our activities in the past, but climate change
later in this century will be determined by what we do now. We need to adapt our way of life now, so that
we can prepare for the changes that are already in our climate system.

The more energy we use, the more we contribute to climate change, and the worse our effect on the environment.
This makes our ecological footprint higher.
WHY WASTE YOUR ENERGY?
People often think that they can’t make a difference, but you can!
When you add individuals doing just a little bit together, it turns into something big!
Electricity makes our lives more comfortable and convenient. However, it is becoming more
and more important that we notice how many things we do every day, that adds to how much
electricity we use.
About a quarter of the carbon dioxide produced in the UK comes from the energy we use to heat
and light our homes. If we can be more energy efficient, we can reduce this, and help the
environment. More importantly, it is easy to do, and you can save money!
