By reducing and reusing, you should already
have a lot less rubbish in your bin. The last thing to do is recycling what you can of your remaining
rubbish. This means that instead of the rubbish going to the landfill site, it goes to a recycling
centre where it gets sorted and compacted, before being sent to a recycling factory to be make into
new things.
Recycling is good, as it makes use of old resources instead of having to get them from nature e.g. recycled
paper uses old paper to make new paper, instead of having to make it from trees. When compared to making products
form scratch, recycling also uses less energy and water.
Remember when recycling, to put the right things in your bin. What is and isn’t allowed will vary depending on
your council area. There are contact details in the ‘councils’ section of this website, if you would like more
information on recycling in your area.
If the wrong things go in your bin, it becomes ‘contaminated’. This can result in whole loads of material for
recycling ending up in landfill, as they can’t be recycled e.g. if a load of paper for recycling is contaminated with
broken glass, the recycling factory will not take it from the recycling centre, which can cost a lot of time and money.
