The best thing we can do, is reduce the amount of rubbish we have in the first place!
That way, less is going to the landfill site, and less rubbish has to be recycled, saving energy.
Here are some simple ideas on how to reduce the amount of rubbish you produce:
Take a ‘bag for life’ when you go shopping—it will reduce the number of plastic bags you have to throw out - or that take up a whole cupboard in the kitchen!
Avoid disposable products—cameras, plates, razors, cups, nappies, barbeques.
Try to buy produce with the least packaging e.g. instead of buying apples on a tray, cover
with plastic wrap, pick loose ones—that way you will only have an apple core to throw out.
Take your lunch to school / work in a reusable container, instead of wrapped in materials that have to be thrown away.
Register with the Mail Preference Service (www.mpsonline.org.uk). This will stop up to 95% of the junk mail that comes through your letter box.
