SPEND NOTHING, SAVE SOMETHING!

You can do these right now, without any disruption to your routine!

Don’t leave you mobile phone charger in the plug socket when its not in use – this uses nearly as much energy as when you phone is charging

Turn your thermostat down by 1°C – can save up to 10% of heating costs

Take a shower instead of a bath – uses only 40% of the hot water need for a bath (unless you have a power shower)

Turn off unnecessary lights when you are leaving a room for more than 10 minutes

Turn of TV’s, DVD players, computers etc – leaving them on standby uses almost as much electricity as having them on

Don’t leave your fridge or freezer door open for longer than necessary – the cold air escapes and it uses more energy to get it back to the cold temperature

Only boil the amount of water you need in your kettle

Close curtains at night to stop heat being lost through windows – 10% of heat lost form homes escapes through the windows

Don’t open windows or doors to cool a room – turn down the heating

Use cooler wash temperatures and full loads in the washing machine – modern washing powders work just as well now at lower temperatures. By turning it down to 30°C can save 40% of energy

Fridges don't need to be cooler than 3-5°C and freezers do their job at -15°C. Any colder and they're wasting energy and your money
